For one week
in 1852, Vallejo was the capital of California. The next year is
became the capital once again for a month's time. Since then of
course, the city has passed the privilege on and the government
has established a navy yard to overcome the town's loss. The
city was named after the Mexican military officer who helped
settle the area, Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. His name
choice for the territory was to be Eureka, but the town's
folk assured him otherwise that it be named after their own
general.
